PodChatLive and Podiatry’s Involvement in Cycling

PodChatLive is the monthly livestream for the ongoing education of Podiatrists and also other people that might be involved. It is hosted by Craig Payne from Melbourne, Australia and Ian Griffiths from England, United Kingtom. The stream goes out live on Facebook after which is later edited and uploaded to YouTube so more people can access it. Each livestream includes a different guest or selection of guests to talk about a different topic each month. Queries are posted live during the Facebook stream and responded to live by the hosts and guests. The audio version is published as a PodCast available on iTunes and also Spotify and the other usual podcast resources. They've gained a significant following among podiatrists which is increasing. PodChatLive can be considered one of the ways through which podiatrists could get free professional development hours or continuing medical education credits.

Episode 18 of the series looked at cycling and podiatry and related issues. The guests were the physiotherapist, Nathan White and the podiatrist, Robert Brown. Rob Brown was former head Physio for the Orica-GreenEdge pro cycling team and now specialises in cycling analysis, injury and bike fit. Nathan White has worked closely with many elite cyclists throughout Australasia and is co-founder of the custom made orthoses company Cobra9 Cycling Orthotics. In the episode on cycling they talked about what a bike fit consists of and how important the bike fit is to prevent injury and improve cycling economy. They also talked about the common foot problems cyclists present with and the clinical reasoning behind managing them. This was important due to the nature of the cycling footwear and the biomechanics of cycling which is so different t walking and running. They also had an in-depth discussion about the foot level interventions both within the shoe (orthoses) and external to it (at the interface with the cleat/pedal).
